News: September 2010. Modern Homes at the “Inflection Point”

Sep 17, 2010 by Paul

I wasn’t a big fan of “The Tipping Point”, Malcolm Gladwell’s treatise on the obvious. It struck me as a very long-winded essay, penned by a student desperate to stretch the subject to the required length. Now, Gladwell sold a billion books, so who’s the smart one, really? His blockbuster success has me tempted to start work on “Your Yard Will Grow: The Front Lawn” or “Knives Are Sharp – Be Careful!” to round out the immensly profitable genre of the obvious…

But I will borrow his insight to suggest that modern residential architecture has now reached a defining moment: it has become part of the Toronto urban fabric after years of being the exclusive indulgence of the very adventurous or the very wealthy. Affordable modern homes are pronouncing themselves in many neighbourhoods – from the Shaft House in East York (www.shafthouse.com) to the upcoming Trinity+Bellwoods Townhomes (www.trinitytowns.com).  Modern architecture is poping up throughout the city, from bespoke custom homes (many, I’m proud to say being built by my own clients!) to small architectural gems being built by savy developers.

I’m very honoured to be representing a number of modern infill projects this Fall, at a number of different price points.  Don’t hesitate to get in touch with me if you’re on the lookout for modern and unique properties in Toronto.
